"Shag Carpet Toilet" is a nostalgic look back to what it was like to be a 14 year-old boy in Stratford, Connecticut during the Summer of 1972

This author's blogposts are always chock full of non-PC observations, clever word play, and unique expressions of his overall appreciation for the absurdities of life, all wrapped up in his keen sense of humor, so I pretty much expected to find more of the same in his book. I'm pleased to say that's exactly what I did find... and then some.

As a plus, I also got an unexpected trip back to my childhood. Okay, so technically, he wasn't actually writing about my childhood, because I was already married with children during the story's time frame, but that's beside the point. He coulda been. And he coulda been writing about yours, too. See, the kids in this book are so representative of kids we all went to school with, every reader is bound to recognize some long-lost friends and enemies. Oh, and if you and your friends had a keen sense of (ahem) adventure, there's a good chance you'll relate to some of the bone-headed things they do, too. I sure did. But ya know, even if you aren't old enough to remember doing any of those "fun" things like playing on box cars or tossing candy at the other kids at the Saturday matinee, it doesn't matter. You'll still enjoy this book. Know why? It's funny. And funny is funny, no matter how old you are.

With rapier like wit, the author tells a tale of yesteryear which, if you are not careful, may send you down the rabbit hole of fond memories of your past childhood growing up. A simpler time when life was fun and did not carry the worries of today. A master of the English language, Mr. Lynch is able to paint a realistic, yet humorous view of adolescent life, that we all can relate to. )
Kenneth Lynch's Shag Carpet Toilet brought me back to 1986, when Rob Reiner's Stand by Me hit the big screen. I'm left with the same wonderful feeling of "Wow!" I laughed at the childhood shenanigans, cursed at the ruthless bullies, mocked the Catholic school personnel, and remain touched by the depth of boyhood friendships. Alas, I'm thanking my lucky stars that I wasn't born with a Y chromosome. This book includes it all, for everyone excitement, humor, meaning, intrigue, poignancy, love in various forms, and -of course- a shag carpet toilet. It's fast-paced and fun-filled. Kenneth writes with an impressive balance of hilarity and heart. In short, Shag Carpet Toilet is a must-read!
This book came to us with the cover folded over and several pages1-10 folded. Very disappointed that it arrived this way. This book was written by our friend and we were hoping for it to be new instead of looking worn and used. Maybe books should be wrapped in sleeves before being shipped with other items.
Shag Carpet Toilet has something for everyone from pick-up games to picking up girls, and raking leaves to raking shag carpeting. Ken Lynch takes us on a hilarious look at his childhood in 1972, while adding heartwarming moments along the way. Shag Carpet Toilet is Leave It To Beaver meets The Wonder Years. Though the fashions have changed, Ken Lynch's timeless novel will never go out of style.
A must read for any lapsed Catholic (or most current ones), this book had me laughing all the way up to the sad last page. Ken really brings back the feel of moving from Catholic grade-school to public high-school, and does it with a constant "just when you think you know the punch line" feel that made it a page turner from the very start!
This book had me in stitches from the first page. Anyone who's ever attended a parochial school, grown up Catholic, or grown up with Catholic friends will identify with much of this book. Also, it rings true to anyone who grew up in a small town. Mickey's adventures are so real, funny, and well detailed that the reader becomes totally captivated by the story. From one rib-tickling tale to the next, you'll love sharing Mickey's eighth grad summer with him! I recommend this book highly!
